India upbeat, Australia downcast ahead of Delhi ODI

After their crushing victory at Nagpur, India will be looking to forge ahead in the seven-match One-Day cricket series against Australia when the two meet in the third game, a day-night affair, at Ferozeshah Kotla here Saturday.
The series is nicely poised 1-1, the visitors winning the opener by four runs in Vadodara and the hosts taking the second by 99 runs.

Ricky Ponting's side has been hit hard with a series of injuries to their frontline players and worse, Brett Lee has been ruled out of the entire series. They sorely missed Lee and James Hopes at Nagpur and the latter is still not fit to play here too.

To make matter worse, wicket-keeper Tim Paine fractured his finger at Nagpur and was ruled out for the rest of the series. His replacement Graham Manou will be in the thick of action within hours of his arrival.

Ponting knows the situation is precarious, but he has shown in the past that he could manoeuvre his resources in adversity.

India Crush to Australia 2nd ODI by 99 Runs Nagpur

The Indian captain MS Dhoni scored 124 off 107 balls, his fifth century, while Gautam Gambhir struck 76 off 80 balls. After Gambhir's exit, Suresh Raina played a perfect foil to Dhoni, smashing 62 off 50 balls.   

Chasing a victory target of 355 runs, Australia were bowled out for 255 in 48.3 overs. 
Ravindra Jadeja (3-35), Praveen Kumar (2-37) and Ishant Sharma (2-34) were the wicket-takers.

Dhoni added 119 runs with Gambhir and 136 with Raina.

Dhoni's half-century came in 55 balls and included threefours, before he plundered the bowling in the death, bludgeoning six fours and three sixes.   

Virender Sehwag laid the foundation with a blistering 40 off 31 balls with the help of six fours and one six. Yuvraj Singh, coming back to international cricket after missing the Champions Trophy, kept the momentum going, scoring 23 off 24 balls.   

It was a compact performance by the Indian batsmen who fumbled while chasing 293 in the first ODI at Vadodara.

Australia Crush to India 1st ODI by 4 Runs

The first match of the seven-game ODI series between India and Australia in Vadodara had a thrilling finish on Sunday, as the Indian players failed to hold on their nerve and fell short by four runs.At one point the match did seem like heading towards Australia’s grip after the Indian star batsmen were unable to score freely on a batsman-friendly pitch, but the late heroics by Harbhajan Singh and Praveen Kumar made the last 10 overs of the second innings added sparkle to the match.Earlier, opting to bat first Australia scored a respectable score of 292 for eight wickets after a splendid batting performance by captain Ricky Ponting (74 runs), Michael Hussey (73 runs), Tim Paine (50 runs) and Cameron White (51 runs). 

With a target of 293 on the board, the Indian team required a good start from its openers Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag, but both the batsmen struggled in front of Australian spearheads Brett Lee and Shane Watson.

Dravid out of first two ODI against Australia in 2009 series

Rahul Dravid, the only Indian other than Sachin Tendulkar to have scored 10,000 runs in both forms of the game, was omitted, at least from the first two games, from the Indian squad for the seven-match series against Australia commencing next week.

The National selection committee met here Thursday and announced a 15-member team, led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, for the matches at Vadodara (Oct 25) and Nagpur (Oct 28). Dravid's omission ominously might mean he bid goodbye to his ODI career.

The squad does not contain any surprises, given Dhoni's well-known preferences. The decisions to drop Dravid and include the likes of untried 22-year old fast bowler Sudeep Tyagi at the expense of Rudra Pratap Singh and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja for Yusuf Pathan, were to be expected
